Coming of age at Sundance 2024

Several films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival reflected not so much on the past itself, as on people’s often complex and conflicted relation with it: the focus was not on revisiting figures and events from before, but on looking at the way a given person relates to them today.

This is the kind of reckoning most of us have to eventually face, simply because of our own ties to people who were forged in bygone times: namely, our parents. At least four films at this year’s edition centred on children dealing with their father, his actions from long ago, his antiquated behaviour, and the possibility of him changing today.
